Payback with your own numbers
DIY mini-split kit or installed?
The short answer
The honest answer depends on quotes only you can get, so this page does the arithmetic on your numbers: payback years is the upfront cost divided by the yearly saving. Get your yearly saving from the calculator (difference between your current fuel cost and the heat pump cost), then compare an installed quote with a DIY kit plus everything you must still pay for.

What to compare besides price
- Warranty terms. Compare parts and compressor coverage for DIY versus professional installation.
- Electrical. Breaker size, disconnect and wire run are on the DIY bill if you do not do them yourself.
- Sizing. A kit sized without a load calculation can be undersized at your design temperature; see sizing.
- Performance proof. Check the model's ENERGY STAR cold-climate listing on its brand page.
- Incentives. Some programs require licensed contractors: rebates and credits.
Questions people ask
Can I install a mini-split myself?
Pre-charged "DIY" kits use quick-connect line sets so no refrigerant handling is needed, but you still need correct electrical supply and a safe mount, and local rules may require a permit or a licensed electrician. Some manufacturers void the warranty unless a licensed installer does the work. Read the warranty before you buy.
Why do you not show kit prices?
No public source publishes verified kit or installed prices in bulk, and prices change daily. We would rather show nothing than a number we could not source. Enter your own quotes in the calculator above.
Do DIY kits qualify for cold-climate ratings?
Some do. Look the model up in the ENERGY STAR cold-climate list on the brand pages and check the 5°F capacity for your design temperature.
